Alumni Library was built in 1910 on the site of the previous library, Hubbard Hall, which, except for the Stephens Stack Room had burned to the ground on 1 January 1910. The new building was named Alumni Hall, beacuse a substantial part of the money to build it was contributed by the Alumni Association. The reading room in the new building was built by David Z. Norton of Cleveland and named in his honor.

The building remained the College Library until 17 October 1963, when the books were moved to the newly constructed Chalmers Memorial Library. On 18 April 1964, the building was redidctaed as Ransom Hall, in honor of John Crowe Ransom.
