Traditions

Kenyon's first Commencement was held in 1829. The ceremony is held outdoors on Samuel Mather Lawn on the second Saturday in May. Commencement is the formal academic ceremony at which graduates' degrees are officially conferred by their institution. It is a ceremony that includes practices that are hundreds of years old, as well as traditions that are specific to Kenyon College. Among these are the traditions are:

  • Graduating seniors lining up on Middle Path and then processing past a gauntlet of the faculty.
  • Senior Sing, the companion ceremony to the Freshman Sing. Students gather on the steps of Rosse Hall and sing four traditional Kenyon Songs.
  • A Commencement luncheon following the ceremony: a final opportunity for graduates to celebrate with friends and family before leaving campus.
